February Mix: Love On The Dancefloor

You know, I was going to post this on Valentine’s Day, but Amie’s Make-Out Mix just seemed so much more fitting for the occasion. Besides, every day should be about love, so why not post hearingade’s official monthly mix on just any old February Friday?

Maybe some of you remember high school dances (and even still participate in them? Do we have any teenaged readers, or are we all a bunch of oldsters here?) and even if you don’t, plenty of movies just won’t let you forget them. Sure, most of us didn’t have a live band like Letters to Cleo serenading our special night of awkward shyness, we certainly didn’t have big to-dos over the prom king and queen, and the whole dancefloor didn’t erupt in synchronized choreography — heck, I don’t even think any of my school dances had a punchbowl. But it’s fun to reminisce about those nights long ago in the high school gymnasium, even if you did spend most of the time leaning up against a wall pining away for some punk rock to break up the pop music monotony (and equal parts anticipating and dreading the certainty that at some point during the night, the DJ would play “Y.M.C.A.” like it actually mattered).

So I’ve gone ahead and compiled a mix of songs* that highlighted some of our favorite high school dance scenes (and one high school reunion scene, because I couldn’t not) of movies and television. If you still have your old prom dress, now’s a good time to throw it on and find yourself a dance partner.

Love On The Dancefloor

Fade Into You – Mazzy Star (Gilmore Girls)

Little Heaven – Toad the Wet Sprocket (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

Earth Angel – The Penguins (Back to the Future)

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes – The Platters (American Graffiti)

Time After Time – Cyndi Lauper (Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion)

If You Leave – OMD (Pretty in Pink)

The Rockafeller Skank – Fatboy Slim (She’s All That)

Come Sail Away – Styx (Freaks and Geeks)

Keep On Loving You – REO Speedwagon  (Drive Me Crazy)

One Way Love – Elizabeth Daily (Better Off Dead)

Cruel To Be Kind – Letters to Cleo (10 Things I Hate About You)

Built This Way – Samantha Ronson (Mean Girls)

Flesh on Fire – James House (Teen Wolf)

Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want – The Smiths (Never Been Kissed)

Free Bird – Lynyrd Skynyrd (That ’70s Show)

* Not all songs are the same versions featured in the scenes. Some are just the versions I have and/or like better.
