A few years ago, when Amy Winehouse released Back To Black, there was a song called “Me & Mr. Jones.” It’s one of my personal favorite Winehouse songs for many reasons, one of which is the fact that it introduced the phrase “fuckery” into my lexicon. A fun fact is that the titular Mr. Jones is actually the rapper Nas so it’s kind of interesting that the new posthumous single from my chav queen features Nas.
Winehouse was recording her long gestating Back To Black follow-up when she died, so it wasn’t a surprise to anyone that the tomb was getting raided for a posthumous release. What is kind of surprising, however, is the fact that Island Records is releasing something so soon. Instead of keeping all the new material under wraps for a while and releasing as close to a proper third album as they could (Kind of like Elliott Smith’s posse did with From a Basement on the Hill), camp Winehouse has tossed together Lioness: Hidden Treasures, which consists of a new song or two (like the jam with Nas) but mostly it’s just demos and covers and stuff. That isn’t to say I’m not looking forward to it. It’s just that it looks a lot like a quick cash grab — And with a December release date so it’s just in time for the holidays! — and that most of the material looks like it would have just been better saved for an Amy Winehouse Tenth Anniversary Boxed Set with Commemorative “Rehab” Shot Glasses. All I’m really saying is… I’d drink out of Amy Winehouse shot glasses. For sure.
